After more than twenty years of living in England, I discovered a typical English entertainment - a pub quiz. For months, I listened to my friend Nigel, with whom I work every day, about his trips on Thursday nights to the Alma pub for a quiz. Nigel has his own team there, and I wasn't sure that I would fit into a company that has been playing together for years. And that's when I came up with the idea to lead my company of friends. I sent a message to my Croatian friends from Cambridge, Mara (from Sinj) and Matea (from Split). Both agreed straight away and that's how it started. We registered our team under the name "Outlanders." One of the evenings, Matea was replaced by Mara's English friend Simon, so we changed the name of our team to "Simon says." The questions in the quiz are divided into 6 categories. For example, one evening those categories were:
1) Art and literature
2) Science and nature
3) Live music
4) "Back to the future"
5) General knowledge
6) Pictures
The owner of the pub reads the questions through the microphone, and usually at that moment the full pub falls silent. There are 10 questions in each category. At the end of each category, the paper with the answers is exchanged with the neighbouring team, so no one marks the answers themselves. When the answers are scored the neighbouring team returns the paper which is then taken to the pub owner who announces the order and points for each team. There are also prizes for the first few places, and the winners receive a cash prize.
From the Alma pub quiz, I can conclude that quizzes are an extremely popular form of entertainment among all generations. In the pub I see teams of students, in their early twenties all the way up to people my age and older. The quiz starts at 9 p.m. and ends around 11:30 p.m. so we enjoy a nice dinner out before the quiz starts. We Croatian girls, whose ages cover the mid-twenties, mid-thirties, and mid-fifties, are happy to make this a new tradition.

Kviz u pubu Alma
1) Umjetnost i književnost
2) Znanost i priroda
3) Živopisna muzika
4) “Povratak u budućnost”
5) Opće znanje
6) Slike
Vlasnik puba preko mikrofona čita pitanja i obično u tom trenutku dubkom puni pub utihne.
Kviz počinje u 21 sat i završava negdje oko 23.30 sati.
